Glimpse into Kumaoni, architecture, lifestyle and cuisine

Their ancient temples and splendid architecture leaves you in a state of amazement. The itinerary begins at Delhi, where Ranikhet Express leads you to Kathgodam at the dawn and then a drive through the twirling roads drops you at Almora. Frankly, if you are not too tired of the rail and road journey, you can begin the trek right here. At approximately 2500 meters, the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to barking deer, himalayan black bear, leopard, serow, sambhar and a few rare species.

For the tree lovers, the sanctuary is lined with oaks, rhododendrons and cedars among others. The best time to visit Binsar is from October to March as the clear weather lets you soak in the beauty of snow clad peaks like Nandadevi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Panchachuli massif and the entire Kumaon Himalayas range. On a human front, the locals are warm and welcoming. An elaborately detailed chat gives you a window into their lives, cultures and customs. And if they really like you, they open a treasure of ancient stories cherished over generations.

These stories and the steadily rising moon are the perfect companions as you retire for the day. The dawn of the next day brings in even more splendid destinations like the Jageshwar temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. This temple, rather the temple city, dating 9th to 13th century AD is a cluster of 124 exquisitely crafted stone temples, believed to be renovated by Adi Shankaracharya. The peaceful walks through the mighty Himalayas, a glimpse into the locals’ lives, architectural marvels like the Vridh (Old) Jageshwar leave you wanting for more. And after such enchanting experiences we’re are sure you will have a tough time fighting the Monday blues at work.

Kumaon lies at the feet of the mighty Himalayas. Situated between Garhwal and Nepal, Kumaon offers an unspoiled natural environment where forests and wildlife are yet to unfold their mysteries. Local religious customs and ancient traditions are still alive here. In this area, cultures have blended together leaving behind a variety of architectural wonders like ancient temples, prehistoric paintings and charming Kumaoni houses set amongst green terraces. Our itinerary covers both, the cultural and natural aspects of this region.

Each season brings its own magic. Spring brings in blue skies, fruit trees blossom, and the forests turn flaming red with rhododendron flowers. Autumn comes in with golden sunshine, hills dotted with cosmos flowers and the wild cherry trees in bloom. Winter is crisp and clear, the sweet scent of the mimosa filling the air.

The highlight of this trek is the concept of the Village Trek. Visiting a home in the village or in a camp in the village itself, it provides an insight into the lives and daily routine of the Kumaoni villager. Overnight stays around these areas give you a chance to experience their warm hospitality and spend quality time to understand how they live their lives.

Starting from Delhi we take you to explore the magnificent beauty and diversity Himalayas offer. We drive to Binsar and stay in a hotel. With great Himalayan views and excellent hospitality, it is a perfect base to explore Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is an ideal destination for adventure lovers, bird watchers and nature lovers.

Situated at elevation of 2141 meters above the sea level, the sanctuary is teeming with Barking Deer, Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, Serow, Sambhar and more than 250 species of birds. You get stunning views of Himalayan peaks such as Panchchuli, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Kedarnath from here.

Our trek begins the next day. The village treks lead through picturesque villages with wonderfully carved doors and windows, terraced fields, waterfalls, streams and pine, cedar, oak and Rhododendron forests.

Dhaulchina from Binsar is a 7 km moderate trek. With beautiful forests and Himalayan views, it is a pleasure connecting with nature.

A 3 km trek downhill to spiritual hamlet of Jageshwar comes next where you can explore its ancient 8-12th century Shiva temples and stay overnight at Van Serai Lodge. Counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country, Jageshwar lies in a beautiful narrow valley hedged by monarch-sized, ancient deodars. Exquisite ancient temple ruins, beautiful Himalayan vistas, gurgling stream nearby, Jageshwar offers a spiritual retreat. With morning Yoga sessions and options for massage as well, you can choose to soak in the spiritual energy of this holy area or go for hikes in the surrounding woods. A picnic on the cool riverside is also a very enticing option. On the way we will also visit the old Jageshwar.
